Tourism hit as soccer mad Germans stay home

The Euro 2012 has had a kickback effect on tourism visits in Salzburg – particularly those parts of the region that usually get the most German guests.

Wolfgang Breitfuss, who's in charge of tourism at Saalbach-Hinterglemm, said: "It seems as if this year the German guests are going to be arriving a bit later than usual.

"Our guests here in this region are usually from Germany and it's always like that when football is on the agenda somewhere else in the world. The Germans simply decide to come on holiday later. The German players are good, and they will probably progress a fairway into the championships. That's why the Germans prefer to stay home, and as a country watch the matches and enjoy them. We are hoping of course that as soon as the football is over the German guests will still make their annual holiday here."

Independent of the football local tourism officials were not expecting a fantastic result for June anyway – because unlike last year most of the spring holidays took place in May this year.
