Twin baby Lemurs born at Salzburg Zoo

Rare lemur twins were born in Salzburg zoo recently, bringing the total number of lemurs up to 10.

The animals weigh just 60 grammes and spent the first few days tucked close to the mother's belly.

The babies then became adventurous and climbed onto their mother's back and within a few more days, the rhino-house become a lemur-playroom.

The lemurs come from Madagascar, where the species is under threat. Their living space, dry and rain forests, are being turned into agricultural lands. In the last 20 years, the population of lemurs living in the wild has gone back by a quarter.

The main characteristic of the half-apes are the black and white circles on the tail, which is also clearly visible on young animals.

The tail plays an important role in the social behaviour of the animals. The male animals, for example, compete in "stink-contests" whereby they brush the tail with scents and flick it towards the opponent – he who stinks most, wins in this case.
