Solar cells on school rooftops in Salzburg

The regional government in Salzburg is supporting a project which involves the installation of solar cells on the rooftops of select schools.

300,000 Euros are being made available for the project, which will help power schools and teach students about renewable energy sources.

The project was approved by the regional government on the grounds that the students of the schools would learn more about the renewable energy provided by the solar cells.

The regional councillor responsible, Sepp Eisl (ÖVP) said: "We offer this in a variety of teaching modules for teachers and students - in collaboration with partners."

In the first year, around 40 installations should be possible to carry out, according to the government.

Many neighbours have voiced their approval of the idea, Eisl said. He said: "It is a must for the community to benefit from the installations, and with our pedagogic concept the children will have a raised awareness of the environment and the renewable energy sources of the future."

One of the first interested communities was Adnet, a town in Tennengau. Mayor Wolfgang Auer (ÖVP) hopes that the solar cell project inspires citizens to purchase similar energy sources for their homes.

Installing solar cells on the rooftops of a school is estimated to cost 7.500-10,000 Euros.
