Dirty water caused by excrement

Health experts are struggling to find the source of excrement that has contaminated water supplies at the town of Köstendorf in Salzburg province.

Recent tests found that the water was contaminated by faecal bacteria – which could only have come from either human or animal excrement that had somehow ended up in the water supply.

Locals in Köstendorf have been advised to boil their water or to buy bottled water while the regular tap water remains contaminated.

Four hundred households have been affected by the contaminated water, which experts confirmed contained a heightened level of faecal coliform.

Adults are not in much danger, according to medical professionals, but children should drink boiled water or water from other sources to avoid the risk of diarrhoea.

The water is expected to be clean again by the end of the week, once the drinking water pipes have also been cleaned, say officials.
