Red faced over Danish kids poison alert
Red faced medical officials cancelled a full-scale poisoning alert with five doctors, 20 paramedics and two air ambulances when 28 schoolchildren who fell ill on a hiking trip were discovered to have mild sunburn.
Panicking teachers dialled 999 when the youngsters from Denmark aged from 12 to 14 began to complain of sickness during the mountain walk in St Koloman, Austria.
But the emergency staff were stood down when medics discovered the pupils had suffered nothing worse than slight sunstroke.
Rescue service spokesman Anton Meisl said: "They seemed really unwell."
But a hospital spokesman in Salzburg explained: "One of the children started to feel unwell and then there seems to have been a hysterical chain reaction where one after another all the others said they felt unwell too."
