Man catches boa in Salzburg

A walker caught a 2.3 meter snake after he spotted it on the banks of the River Glan in Salzburg and took it to an animal refuge centre in the city.

The man was walking along the river when he came across the seven kilo heavy boa constrictor.

Uwe Gottschalk, from the local animal rescue service, said: "It was very brave, but we would not recommend doing this as they are very dangerous. The animal was totally healthy and had been well kept. She was used to being held - and was not aggressive.

After being checked over the Boa was taken to the Salzburg Haus der Natur where it will be looked after.

Haus-der-Natur spokesperson Charlotte Kraus said: "The snake did not need any treatment and is now being kept in our terrarium."

Susanne Hemetsberger, head of the Austrian Animal Rescue Service, said: "If you make such a discovery you should notify the animal rescue centre. You should never underestimate the danger of snakes such as a Boa who squeeze their prey to death before they swallow it.
