Number of Vorarlberg farms dramatically decreases

The number of farms in Austria’s most westerly province of Vorarlberg has decreased further according to new statistics released by Statistik Austria.

Between 1990 and 2010 the number of farms in Vorarlberg has decreased by 38 per cent.

In Tirol they have only decreased by 26 per cent and in Salzburg by comparison by only 21 per cent.

In 2010 there were 4,500 farms registered in Vorarlberg – a reduction of 270 since 2007.

The number of farms with over thirty hectares has remained the same. But the number of small farms is decreasing rapidly.

Local Agricultural minister from the ÖVP Erich Schwärzler said the reason behind this was that there are more small farming businesses in Vorarlberg than in other regions.

Many farms close as there is nobody who wants to take over the business, many youngsters do not see potential in the agriculture business.

However, the number of hectors of farming land has not decreased – with 215,000 hectors of land; it remains the same as it was almost twenty years ago.

The reason is often when small farms close bigger neighbouring farms simply take over the land.
