Salzburg city leaves rubbish longer

The city of Salzburg wants to collect rubbish every 14 days to save money, local politicians have said.

The proposal would mean for Salzburg homes – and especially detached houses – that bins are emptied every 14 days instead of once a week.

The aim is to save costs by cutting the use of bin-vans. It is said Salzburg residents will also be forced to strictly stick to the recycling guidelines to limit residual waste.

A decree to this effect is already being drafted. Vice-mayor Harald Preuner said: "The attraction is that each individual is saving money. That's a saving of 20 percent for the affected properties." For a rubbish tax of 217 Euros, households save up to 40 Euros.

Some 2,000 households in Salzburg would be affected by the 14-day bin collection plan.

Winfried Herbst, manager of the waste department in Salzburg promises individual solutions said: "Take for example the Berchtesgadener Road or the Mostwastlweg in Salzburg-Gneis for example.

Typically a zone which one could service every 14 days. But there are two restaurants – there, a 14-day interval for bin collecting wouldn't work. In these cases, we always have exceptions. It's a delicate task."

The proposal has yet to be accepted in the city council and should take effect in March.
