Bridal ball trend catching on

By Rachael Williams

More and more couples are choosing to relive their big day at "Bridal balls" and in Tirol organisers are celebrating the third successful ball in Zillertal.

On 3 November 2012 the "Brautkleiderball" took place in SichtBAR in Zillertal. The SichtBAR is a venue elevated 16 metres above the ground and surrounded by the spectacular rolling scenery of Tyrol.

In this idyllic setting married couples were invited to give their wedding clothes a second lease of life and share a romantic evening with other couples for the third consecutive year.

Organiser of the Brautkleiderball Gerhard Angerer said: "More and more married couples are using the ball as an opportunity to celebrate their second wedding. It is lovely to see so many brides together in their beautiful white dresses to celebrate a wedding revival!"

The first Brautkleiderball took place in Berlin in 1996 and was a small event. In successive years the ball attracted a great deal of interest and several more of these balls began cropping up in smaller German cities. It was not long before the idea caught on internationally and bridal balls have been organised in countries such as Greece, Italy and the USA.

Such bridal balls have also taken place in Vienna at the Grand Hotel Wien and in Salzburg in the grounds of Klessheim Palace and have proven popular.

Depending on the venue, tickets cost around 100€ and this price includes a glass of champagne, a piece of wedding cake, a buffet, live band and even the possibility for couples to re-enact their wedding ceremony. Ticket prices also include a small charity donation to the child protection organisation SOS Children's Villages.

Next year the ball is scheduled to take place on 9 November.
