More deaths on Austria’s ski slopes

The current statistics for ski accidents released by the Austrian Alpine police show that there have been less people who were injured but clearly more deadly accidents. Salzburg is in second place in the nationwide ranking.

Compared to last year, the police have observed a decrease in severe accidents such as collisions, falls through external interference or accidents with slope vehicles. The current statistics show that there have been 1,500 accidents while last year there were 1,750.

The number of deaths, however, has risen sharply from 17 to 27. Hans Ebner, head of the Alpine police, said: "Usually people who die from heart and circulation problems are most prominent but this year the trend appears to be reversed. Currently there have been 18 deaths after traumatic falls and nine deaths due to heart and circulation problems."

When comparing the statistics of Austria’s states, Tyrol comes first with ten deaths, followed by Salzburg with eight and Carinthia with four deaths. There were two deaths each registered on slopes in Upper Austria and Styria and one in Vorarlberg.

The number of people who have died in avalanches has not changed compared to last year.
